Project Description:
This project will introduce students to research methods in the history of mathematics and in particular the history of group theory. Students will read primary historical sources in order to track the evolution of a group theoretical idea or theorem over time and examine the mathematical context in which it arose, along with the biographies and political contexts of the associated mathematicians.

The only real prerequisite for this project is MATH 327: Group Theory. In fact, a secondary goal of the project is to help solidify students' knowledge of group theory by examining the material from a much different perspective than the one taken in class. The ability to read in a foreign language (e.g., French or German) would be helpful but is absolutely not a requirement.

 Dates: January 26th - February 16th, 2022

Number of Students: 10

This project is Non-Selective.
