The Biology Department has two opportunities to combine biology with aesthetic and educational goals. Both projects involve updating departmental displays. A biology major is not required, and teams of students that provide different skills is encouraged. The Biology Department will provide funds for display materials.
There is a display case in the south hallway that houses the Geochron and Biology t-shirts. The goal is to make this a display about biological clocks related to photoperiod, with information for how organisms use light receptors to track time, ranging from the molecular to the ecosystem levels. The information will be arranged around the Geochron. There also needs to be information displayed below the Geochron that informs viewers of how to interpret the display.
The cabinet in the south hallway that currently has an (unused) aquarium display is going to be renovated to its original form, with glass doors like all the other displays. We need students to first submit ideas about what might be an effective use of the display (the ideas need to be submitted to the department for review and approval), and then create the display. One idea that would like considered is a display about careers in biology featuring Oberlin alumni as examples, with photos and quotes that show the range of career paths that biology majors can take.
