Program Description:
The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Astro-German composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Profs. Charles McGuire and Jamie O’Leary – along with a number of guest lecturers from the College and Conservatory – will lead an in-depth examination of Beethoven’s nine symphonies over the course of Winter Term. After an introduction to Beethoven and the symphony during his lifetime, each class day will consist of two parts: first, a guided listening to one of Beethoven’s symphonies. Then, after a break, a 75-minute discussion on that day’s symphony. Additional lectures on topics including historical performance and Beethoven’s symphonies as well as orchestration and conducting Beethoven’s symphonies will also take place.

Dates: January 6th - January 28th, 2020

Number of students: Up to 150
