3D printing has been around since the 1980’s. It became accessible to hobbyists in 2012 with the creation of the original Makerbot Replicator priced at around 1700 dollars. Since then, the knowledge base of 3D printing has exploded online and the cost of them has dropped below 200 dollars. With increased accessibility, it has become extremely easy to learn about 3D printing and participate in the growing community wielding this tool in the areas of engineering, art, space travel, medicine...the list goes on.

In this winter term group project, we are asking participants to take a leap into the world of 3D printing. You will collaboratively build an inexpensive 3D printer, learn how to tweak its settings to create clean prints, and modify the printer for the purpose of improving its performance. If there is time, you will have a chance to experience the maker community beyond the confines of our work space on Oberlin’s campus by connecting with online communities surrounding the printers we are building in this project. In the end, the desire is that participants become familiar with 3D printing and gain a foundation for using this tool from the lens of their field of study.
