Project Details:

The Mindfulness Meditation Retreat gives students the opportunity to experience first-hand the benefits of intense Mindfulness Meditation Practice from 10am-5pm for two weeks. This is a total of ninety eight hours. The practice involves sitting and walking meditation in the quiet environment of a 3rd floor meditation hall at 280 Elm Street, a location close enough to live on campus during the retreat. The course not only provides a basic understanding of the most essential Buddhist principles for living but more importantly introduces the most central Theravada Meditation Tradition of Southeast Asia and the United States. Vipassana or Mindfulness Meditation, trains the mind to develop increased concentration and attention helpful to both academic students, conservatory musicians, and anyone interested in living a life based on personal inquiry and depth. The meditation practice is easily understood by those from other religious or non-religious backgrounds. Students will neither be encouraged nor discouraged to accept or relinquish beliefs they bring to the course.

Teacher: Jacques Rutzky '77 began meditating at the age of fifteen and at nineteen he became a student of the Thai Meditation Master V.R. Dhiravamsa. After four decades of practice and more than five years on retreat, Dhiravamsa encouraged Jacques to teach. Jacques is the Buddhist Affiliate for ORSL and the teacher for two student groups on campus, a Meditation and Music group for Conservatory students, and soon to offer a meditation group for Faculty Only.

Requirements for full credit: Attendance is required for every sit from 10am to 5pm. Arrive early. Two students each day will be required to help cook lunch for all. A five page self-exploration paper will be due a week after the retreat.

NOTE: each student is required to have an interview with Jacques prior to the retreat. Contact Jacques by text at 440-714-1476 or email: to set up an interview.
