Program Description:
***Project is Limited to Only 4 Students***?

Project Details:
Otherwise known as Alexa's flute stripping class, the goal of this class is to equip the student with the knowledge and confidence to carry out the regular maintenance, known in the business as a "COA" or "clean, oil and adjust", required on their own instrument. Students will disassemble and reassemble their own instrument many times under close supervision. The class will also learn about emergency repairs, how to diagnose problems, and the various approaches to padding. Please note that repadding a flute requires a level of expertise beyond what is possible to accomplish in this short time frame, but the class will cover the techniques used in padding, the various styles of pads used in professional instruments, and students are welcome to work on padding a donated student model flute for an El Sistema type program. Each class is limited to 4 participants. Two sections may be possible if demand is sufficient.

This experience also introduces the student to very strong (but generally unrecognized) employment possibilities for flute technicians, positions that are readily accessible to good flutists with relatively minimal repair skills. Because there is no recognized course available for training flute-specialist technicians in the US, most learn and gain necessary experience on the job. A good flutist applicant who already has the ability to perform a COA is a highly desirable employee.
