APPLICATION DEADLINE NOVEMBER 15th

AMAM19
Project Details
This course offers a behind-the-scenes examination of the Allen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM) with practical training in the Education Department, while also introducing the theory and practice of museum education and gallery teaching. The goal is to guide students toward career paths in the arts. This course is the first step in becoming an AMAM docent (tour guide) and often the entrée to other positions in the museum. We will discuss the role and function of art museums today, examine viewer experiences in museums, and how meaningful exchanges with art create lifelong impact. While studying the AMAM’s extensive collection, we will explore successful teaching methods to facilitate discussions, touring techniques and creative exercises to engage viewers with the works of art. Students will meet with the AMAM director, curators, and staff to further understanding of museum operations and career opportunities, as well as visit other local institutions to compare related careers in the field. 2020 marks the 30th year this AMAM docent training course has been offered at Oberlin College!

To receive credit for the Winter Term Practicum in Museum Education and become a member of the AMAM student docent group, you must complete all written and oral assignments on time, and you must attend all classes, tour observations and field trips as listed in the course syllabus (distributed the first day of class).

Interested students must apply by November 15th AND complete the supplemental questions at bit.ly/MuseumPracticum
